Black Clay Pottery

Just 20 minutes south of the city of Oaxaca is the town of San Bartolo Coyotepec, famous for its black clay pottery, or "barro negro." The families here have been using their unique clay and firing technique for over 2,000 years.

The clay from this region has a unique dark gray color that lends itself well to the production of these ceramic pieces. It wasn't until the 1950s, when Doña Rosa developed a polishing technique that left the pieces jet-black and shiny, that the pottery gained notoriety.

The work from this town is a mix of both functional pieces and decorative art.

Explore the many ways in which black clay pottery is created and used in this informative and curated tour.
